INSTALLING A WINDOW IN YOUR VAN TAKES SOME PLANNING.

Before you dive in, we’ve put together a list of answers to common questions that can help guide your process!

The Best Place to Install a Window in a Van

Many people chose to install their windows as far away from their fan as possible, to create good air flow. However, there is no “best” place to install a window in your van. Instead, consider the pros and cons of different window placement to find a solution that will best meet your needs!

The Pros: Why Should I add a Window to My Custom Van Conversion?

1. Ventilation
As we discussed in our Fan Installation article, proper air flow is an important element to successful van living. It prevents toxic gas build up, mold growth, and removes nasty smells.

There are two keys to proper ventilation. These are intake and exhaust.

While the fan typically pulls air out of the fan (exhaust), it is only able to do so at the rate in which air is allowed into the van. Without a window to allow air in (intake), circulation is quite limited.

However, with a window, there is ample intake of air into the van, and therefore the fan can pull air out quite effectively (exhaust).

2. Temperature Control
Let’s face it, AC Units are expensive and draw huge amount of power. Tough sell for off-grid living.

What’s cheaper than AC? The wind! Having the ability to open up your windows in hotter climates can make all the difference in staying cool and comfortable.

3. The Great Outdoors
While seemingly obvious, we had to throw this one in here. After all, what’s the point of living in a van if not for some sweet views?

4. Lighting
Living in a van without windows can be a bit like living in a cave - there isn’t a whole lot of light coming in. Adding windows can really lighten up the space, boosting your spirits and making it feel much more spacious than it really is.

What Are the Cons of Adding a Window to my Camper Van Conversion?

1. Living in a Fishbowl
It’s great to be able to look out your windows, but when the sun goes down, the reverse effect happens - everyone can look in.

Camping in the wilderness? This isn’t a big deal. But when you’re in a town or city, it can be a bit unsettling.

That brings us to our second point:

2. Windows Let in Cold Air
You will feel cold drafts near the windows, even when they’re closed! Simply put, glass is NOT a good insulator. Your heater will have to work harder to fight these drafts, increasing fuel consumption and routine heater maintenance.

This is why we strongly recommend getting insulated window covers.

While window covers do add to the overall cost of your conversion, they are essential in regulating your van’s temperature and giving you privacy when you want it.

3. Less Storage Space
Depending on the location of your windows, your storage options might be significantly reduced.

Where you place your shelving and cabinets will be limited by where your windows are located. Be sure you have a solid interior layout before installing your windows. Nothing worse than installing a window only to put a cabinet in front of it!

What are the Most Common Places to Install a Window in a Van?

When it comes to installing windows in a van, there are a few common locations that are popular among van lifers and conversion enthusiasts.

1. The Sliding Door
One of the most popular spots is on the sliding door, which provides plenty of natural light to your living space.

2. Behind the Driver’s Seat
Another common area to install a window is on the opposite side of the van from the sliding door, providing symmetry and a balanced look to the van's exterior.

3. Rear Doors
Windows can also be installed in the rear doors of your van. This location provides a great view from your bed!s

4. Bunk Windows
Windows can be installed on the side panels towards the back of the van, creating a scenic view from the bed or living area and providing excellent ventilation in your vehicle.

Ultimately, the placement of windows largely depends on personal preference and the specific design of the conversion.
